Gene Therapy Informative Speech

1418 Words6 Pages

I want you all to imagine a world with no diseases and maybe even no cancer. Seems pretty impossible right? Well, with gene therapy that could all change.
B. Background and Audience Relevance: Gene therapy is essentially using genes as drugs for the treatment of human disease. In the future, this experimental technique may allow doctors to treat a disorder by inserting a gene into a patient’s cells instead of using medicine or surgery. For that reason, I believe it is important to learn about this upcoming breakthrough in the science and medical field.
C. Speaker Credibility: As a Biology major I have learned about DNA and cells and taken my research to the next step by studying how genes work. I also conducted an interview with my biology lab teaching assistant to learn more about the process.
D. Thesis: Learning about the promise of gene therapy is important because it could change the future of medicine forever, impacting our lives, our kids’ lives and so on.
E. Preview of Main Points: In this speech you will learn how gene therapy works, the benefits of this research, and also the risks and challenges this technology poses.
Transition to first main point: To get started, what exactly is gene therapy?
II. Body (Approximately 3 ½-5 ½ mins.)
A. Main Point 1: In order to better understand this technique, we must first, …show more content…

Sub point 1: So what are genes anyway? What do they do? You might think of genes as little computer programs, each designed to have a specific function. Every cell in your body has the same set of genes, but different cell types use different combinations of genes. And even a single cell will change the set of genes it is using with time. How do genes do their work? Well, genes don’t really do the work themselves, they tell others to do it. The genes are just the information storehouse. Genes are made up of DNA, and the DNA consists of strings of bases. The sequence of the bases provides the information, so the DNA is like the hard
