In 1876, over 200 American soldiers were killed at the Battle of Little
Bighorn. The general in charge's ego took over which led to a devastating loss to the Indians and of the men who were severely mutilated. General Custer, also known as George Armstrong Custer, was responsible for his death and many other men under his command in the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
Custer was born on December 5, 1839 to first time parents, father Emanuel Custer and mother Maria Ward Kirkpatrick Custer. At age 16 he went to West Point College and spent the next 5 years there working on his mathematics skills, which he claimed was not his best subject. Even at such a young age he was very competitive. His years spent at West Point, he was always close to being kicked out due to all his demerits. Custer started off as a second lieutenant in the second U.S. Calvary Regiment and was assigned to do volunteering work for the war in Washington. No one knew how much needed he will be till his first take off into the Civil War. In July 1861, he was with his army at the First battle of Bull Run. Custer basically sent messages in between the general's to keep them knowing what was going on. He did really well at that and it led him into the Peninsula Campaign. During this campaign, Custer started to get his reputation of a go get it type of man. The general at the time didn't want to go over the river because he didn't know how deep it was. Then there went Custer straight into the river and passed it all by himself. It shows right there that Custer isn't going to let anything get in the way of battle. Custer was then allowed to lead an attack with four groups of men over the river and into the New Bridge. The attack went successfully.
