In the play Les Belles Soeurs written by Michael Tremblay, which takes place in Montreal, Quebec during the 1960s, the generation gap causes tension between the younger generation and the older generation. The younger generation goes against traditional values which causes the women to have very different opinions on many aspects in the play. There is constant tension between the women in the play as they all hold different values on a societal and religious level. This is portrayed throughout the play through gender norms, prestige and social status, and the Catholic religion.`
In the play Les belles Soeurs, gender norms are being present through the women’s actions leading to misunderstandings between the young generation and the old generation.

Germaine, her sister Rose and their friends consider that working in the night club is a filthy job from a social perception, so they cut their relationship with Pierrette and do not talk to Pierrette. The older generation thinks that it is very cheap for girls to work at the nightclub and working there is only to be picked up. On many occasions, Germaine tells Pierrette that she does not want to talk to her. Even in the end, Pierrette was the only one on Germaine’s side, but still she doesn’t want to talk to her and asks her to leave the house. This is because of their contradicting opinions on going to the nightclub as they both are brought up in different generations. Marie- Ange Brouillette, Germaine’s sisters, and her friends are stealing stamps because they are jealous of Germaine. For them working at nightclub is low esteemed work in the social circle, but stealing stamps is okay. This shows hypocrisy of life they have adopted. Germaine, Therese, and Rose gossip about Monique Bergeron (98-99). By this example, Tremblay wants to show how society flows and accept accusations about female. Also, through these various examples it shows that even though the older generation women go to church, they still act immorally and tell the younger generation that they should not go to the nightclub which tells the audience that they do not actually act like christians. Through these various examples Tremblay shows us the difference in the view of opinions between two
