Genesis is the first book of the Hebrew Bible and was written by Moses. It begins with the story of how the Holy Spirit of God created the universe. The Lord is the Almighty Creator of the world, skies, heavens, oceans, lands, animals, man, and woman. He rules the the universe and begins a relationships with man. In the Book of Genesis, Moses’s description of how woman were created and their purpose for being created, degrades woman’s role in humanity and depicts an unparalleled relationship between the nature of man and woman, therefore, Moses creates three binaries by revealing that woman is a copy of a copy of God, woman’s sole purpose for being created is to serve man, and woman is an imperfect copy of a copy of God. He reveals that woman are actually an imperfect copy of a copy of God and are flawed. In the story of Adam and Eve, Eve persuades Adam to sin, by eating a piece of fruit from the forbidden tree of good and evil. “6 So the woman (seeing that the tree was good for meat, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired, to get knowledge) took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also to her husband with her, and he did eat.” The impact of Moses describing how Eve was the one who persuade Adam to sin and go against God’s orders, creates this idea that man are perfect and woman are imperfect. The way it is revealed that woman are imperfect, enhances the idea that woman are to blame for many problems in society and should be constrained to certain responsibilities. “Unto the woman he said, I will greatly increase thy sorrows, and thy conceptions. In sorrow shalt thou bring forth children, and thy desire shall be subject to thine husband, and he shall rule over thee.” God punishes Adam and Eve by expelling them into the wilderness, but God’s gives more punishment to woman by making childbirth harrowing for them, and appoints man as their ruler. Woman’s role in nature is to no longer help man but be ruled by him. Woman is no longer a servant, but a slave to man kind. The way Moses has described this story between Adam and Eve, especially how it is the woman’s fault for corrupting man kind, further demonstrates how perfect man is.
