Carbon Copy of the Truth? Genesis and the Popol Vuh are mythical stories of creation composed on opposite sides of the world. These stories set the narrative tone for each of their respective audiences (cultures) by giving a sense of purpose for humanity and answering the basic, fundamental question: Why do we exist? In their earliest form, both of these epic stories of human creation and existence were passed down in oral form from generation to generation. Seven Macaw can be compared to Lucifer in the Bible. The gods wanted lord Seven Macaw destroyed because they saw “evil in his self-magnification (Puchner 526).” A parallel can be drawn to Lucifer, an archangel created to rule over the earth, with his fall from heaven because he said he would “make himself the Most High (Isaiah 14:13).” After Seven Macaw was defeated by the twin heroes, Popol Vuh text suggests that the earth was still dark without the light of the sun. After Satan (Lucifer) was defeated and condemned to hell, the earth was the empty void described in Genesis 1:2. God simply wiped out the earth created in Genesis 1:1. The multiple attempts of the Mayan gods at creation may possibly be true and may help to explain the “gap theory” of creation in Genesis. After they triumph through the many obstacles of the underworld, they use their magic and trickery to defeat the demon Xibalba. Hunahpu and Xbalanque put on a show for Xibalba and the ruling court of the underworld by making sacrifices and then bring them right back to life.
