Casey Chang January 23, 2023 Period 5 Hunger Games Essay Genetically modified animals may be in the near future, but how we utilize them is important. In Suzanne Collins’ book The Hunger Games, The Capitol created genetically modified animals through advanced science and technology. These animals were used for many things including war and enforcing power. “During the rebellion, the Capitol bred a series of genetically altered animals as weapons.” (pg 40). Control over the other 12 districts is what the Capitol is infamous for. This control was created with the help of genetically modified animals. They call these animals muttations. Animals such as the Tracker Jackers, Jabberjays, and Mockingjays. Tracker Jackers are similar to wasps, yet much more deadly. However, instead of simply dying off, they mated with female mockingbirds creating a new species known as mockingjays. Mockingjays are birds that have the ability to mimic melodies and sounds. “They had lost the ability to enunciate words but could still mimic a range of human vocal sounds, from a child’s high-pitched warble to a man’s deep tones. And they could re-create songs.” (pg 41) Mockingjays are an example of something that the Capitol did not have control over. They humiliate the Capitol and Katniss coincidentally receives one from the mayor's daughter, Madge. Further in the Games, when Katniss and Rue create an alliance, Rue tells Katniss about how in District 11 they would sing melodies to the mockingjays to let each other know that it is quitting time.
