Introduction: Good Morning year nines, today you will be learning about genetically modified foods. While I go through the power point I want everyone to copy the points in your books and write notes as I speak (2 minutes). Does anyone know anything about genetically modified foods? Well, did you know that we eat genetically modified foods in our everyday life? What are they? Genetically modify foods are organisms whose DNA or genetic material has been scientifically modified using procedures of genetic engineering. A genetically modified organism (GMO) is a plant, animal or any other organism that has been changed using genetic modification. From carrots to wheat to cucumbers and rice, we beings have changed the genetics of so many …show more content…
Genetically modified foods are foods that are reformed to enhance their characters and traits such as strengthened resistance and enhanced nutritional content. For example fruit can be genetically modified so that it can stay fresh and last for a longer amount of time. Now, we will watch a video about genetically modified foods. I want the class to listen to the video and write down the main points discussed in the video (7 minutes). How do we Genetically modify foods/how is it done? Foods are genetically modified mostly using two main techniques or methods. These methods are called the Trojan-Horse-Strategy or the shotgun approach. The idea in this is to either use the Trojan strategy which is conducted with bacteria to deliver micron-sized particles into the nucleus or a technique called "biolistic particle delivery," to blast genetic material into plant cells with a gun type machine. Then you would introduce your new gene, using one of two main methods: a Trojan-horse strategy mediated by bacteria, or a shotgun approach. The latter, first developed in 1987, is less common today. It literally shoots a gene gun, a technique called "biolistic particle delivery," to blast genetic material into plant
