Overcoming a Mass Genocide The whole country froze to see a railcar of Jews leaving, 6 million are dead, it’s the Holocaust. After World War I, Germany was accused of starting the war and forced to pay reparations. Hitler, who was ruling Germany at the time, blamed the Jewish for the extra money and land. Slowly Jewish rights were being taken away and many were sent to Jewish concentration camps; these camps were sometimes only meant for mass murder. A genocide had begun. Throughout these difficult times, everyone who was hated by Hitler overcame many obstacles and they are portrayed in books and short films, such as The Book Thief, Number the Stars, Paper Clips, and even children’s books. The Book Thief, written by Markus Zusak, is about the Holocaust and a young girl named Liesel Meminger who overcomes obstacles to live a normal life during tough times. This film is about a school in Whitwell Tennessee that collected six million paper clips to spread awareness for the deaths of Jews. After the students learned about the Holocaust, they chose to collect paper clips because Norwegians wore them as a symbol and rebellion after the war. However, not everything was easy for them, an obstacle they overcame was trying to gather the paper clips and many of the students waited a long time to get the right amount of paper clips. This challenge was overcome because many people started helping and newspapers were writing about them, very soon the students had collected about eleven million paper clips and they are all stored in one of the authentic railcars that transported so many Jews to their deaths. Whitwell Middle School did something unimaginable for the Holocaust survivors, even through their own struggles, they knew that their hard times would barely compare to the
