In all works of literature there is a genre and a theme present. Genre refers to a style of writing. This means that it could be horror, romance, or science fiction. In order to have these things elements must support its indicated genre. Theme refers to a central topic. This states that it refers to what a reader thinks about the subject, or what is being said about the text. Both genre and thesis are alike and not alike in two different stories. In the story, The Tell- Tale Heart and The Fun They Had the genre and theme are similar and different in so many ways.
The genre in the Tell- Tale Heart is horror. There are many details throughout this story that supports the genre being horror. One supporting detail of horror is foreshadowing. In the beginning of the story the narrator explains he can hear things in heaven and on earth. When the story teller mentions this, it is a hint to the reader that the man has a mental problem. Another supporting feature of horror genre is the fear the author puts in the story. Throughout the story the setting is at night. The last support of horror genre is suspense. In both stories, the authors uses elements to support the general genre. The elements that are used supports the genre horror and the genre science fiction. The two genres are also fictional. None of the two genres are based on real life events. In contrast to the genres Science fiction is based on imagination. The horror genre is based on fear. Also, another difference between the two genres is the elements that are being used to classify the genre type. In the story “The Tell Heart,” elements like foreshadowing, fear, and suspense.
