From an early age, George W. Bush had the qualities of a great leader. His siblings looked up to and respected him. Because of his good leadership skills, Bush decided to follow in his father’s footsteps, and pursue a political career. Bush started out his political career small, running for the governor of his hometown, Texas. Bush quickly became popular, and in 1999, decided to run for president. Bush was successful, and in 2001 was sworn in as the forty-third president of the United States. Due to the legacy of his family’s history in politics, George W. Bush was destined to become a great politician himself, and he proved this by leading our nation through a great national tragedy.

George W. Bush believes that his wife helped him to bring his life in order. Before he married Welch, Bush had a drinking problem. Soon after his marriage, Bush joined the United Methodist Church, and became a born-again Christian. Bush later said, “Drinking began to compete with my energy” (O’Shei & Marren, 2003, 22). Shortly after his fortieth birthday, George W. Bush gave up his poor drinking habits.
After serving as vice president, George H.W. Bush ran for president in the election of 1989. “George W. campaigned hard for his father,” (Kachurek, 2004, 48). When his father was away, serving as vice president, W. Bush would take over and campaign for his father. W. Bush also kept the staff in line and made sure they did their jobs properly. While campaigning for his father, W. Bush made many friends and connections, which he would later count on their support (Kachurek, 2004). Although many people believed W. Bush was preparing the way for his own political goals, W. Bush had not planned on running for president (Kachurek, 2004). In 1989, George H.W. Bush was elected as the forty-first President of the United States, ending George W. Bush’s campaign advising
