Soledad Brother was a really shocking and emotional story made up of the prison letters of George Jackson. In this book he talks about his life inside prison and where his thoughts about the things going on outside stand. In his letters he talks about the perception black people get and the way they are viewed by others, specifically caucasian people. Also, he talks about his life in prison and how instead of becoming a man with no morals he uses his time in jail and becomes a leader and he responds to his mother about the way he views “Beauty” and why he disagrees with her.
To begin with, Jackson was accused of stealing $70 at the age of 16 from a gasoline station in Los Angeles. He got taken to jail and never got a chance to go to trial. He had received an offer to get a light sentence if he would have pleaded guilty even after there was proof of his innocence. He got a sentence of 1 year to a life sentence. 7 of those years he had to suffer in solitary confinement. In one of his letters to Greg, the editor who asked the author for the autobiography, he says,”They accused us of a number of robberies we knew nothing about”, this means that no matter what the crime was then, he was accused of it because he already had a background with robbery and the police officers initially assumed he was guilty because of …show more content…

Using Reader-Response Criticism, I was able to analyze this text better and understood what Jackson went through in prison. His struggles in prison didn’t make him any more corrupt, but only turned him into a global leader. I hope that every person who read the book Soledad Brother can know how treacherous our community system is. I hope that we can all learn how to come together when another situation happens like this in our community to fight against it and show the community, society, and government how much improvement it
