Legendary filmmaker, George Lucas was born on May 14, 1944 in Modesto, California. He was born into an average family with parents that worked average jobs. “Before Lucas became obsessed with the movie camera, he wanted to be a race car driver, but a near fatal accident in his souped-up Fiat just days before his high school graduation quickly changed his mind” (biography.com). This unfortunate accident changed the course of Lucas’s life for the better. He found his way to the University of Southern California to attend film school. During film school, Francis Ford Coppola saw something in Lucas, and began to mentor him. There were ships jumping in and out of light speed. Speeders hovering over the ground, and a giant space station the size of a planet that had to be blown up. They had to create camera techniques that would make this process easier, and allow them to have the freedom to create a movie of this caliber. When Star Wars was released, there was little expectation for the movie. “It was the era of Taxi Driver and Network and Serpico; Hollywood was hot for authenticity and edgy drama, not popcorn space epics” (Kahn, Howie). Although this statement was true before the release of Star Wars, it could not be farther from the truth afterwards. Lucas had created a world that everyone wanted to be a part of, and everyone wanted more. That is when Lucas decided to change the name from just Star Wars to Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. This added to an up and coming industry of video games. As well as those companys he also start THX. THX is the high-quality sound that is standard in most movies. It is most noticeable for the huge THX block letters that pop up on the screen, and that unforgettable sound that send chills down your spine every time it is heard. Lucas no longer holds ownership in Lucasfilms because he sold the rights to Disney. This has opened many doors for more Star Wars movies to be made, and the legacy of what Lucas created to continue. The overwhelming success of Lucas’s career falls on the creation of ILM. It is a company that assisted him in the making of most if not all his movies, and is a big part of most movies that require special effects. It is a company that will continue to prosper, and will not go away when Lucas is no longer apart of the industry. Without it films such as Star Wars, Indian Jones, and Jurassic Park would not exist. There is no telling what the movie industry would be like if Lucas had never gotten into a horrific car accident as a teenager and decided to race cars instead of making movies.
