Ryan Doherty Period E 1984 Paper Love IS Hate. It is the cause of many deaths, Romeo, Juliet, and the minds of Winston and Julia. In the book “1984” by George Orwell, Winston and Julia's relationship was what helped them get through the pain of living under a controlling government. In the beginning, their relationship was nowhere near a normal one. Their relationship is what helps Winston in his rebellion towards the party. In the beginning of the text, Winston has a dream depicting what he wants. In his dream, a dark haired woman is shown who “tore off her clothes and flung them disdainfully aside.”(29). This gesture overwhelmed him because; “With its grace and carelessness it seemed to annihilate a whole culture, a whole system of thought, as though Big Brother and the Party and the Thought Police could all be swept into nothingness by a single splendid movement of the arm.”(29). This showed that what Winston wants is not sex and a naked woman, he wants rebellion and the carelessness of throwing away the rules of the party, as if they were nothing. …show more content…

Julia on the other hand is both young and healthy. Julia likes Winston because he opposes the party in his mind, showing how she is not physically attracted to Winston (even though they have sex most of the time), but she is attracted to the idea of having sex with someone who shares the same hate for the party as her, and the rebellion behind it.
