The only thing we can find in Room 101 is the fear. In George Orwell’s 1984, Winston is arrested for the thoughtcrime and taken to Room 101 where holds his greatest fear: rats. Once Winston is subjected to his greatest fear, he can no longer endure mental pressure. Room 101 is used to force acceptance and control people physically as well as mentally. In Room 101, O’Brien informs Winston, “The worst thing in the world varies from individual to individual. It may be burial alive or death by fire, or by drowning, or by impalement, or fifty other deaths.” This means Room 101 is different for everyone. For me, Room 101 would contain loneliness. At the time, my grandmother was six years old. She was born in rich family and was living happily with her family. But after Mao came to control China, her life completely changed. Mao started to gain popularity and strengthen communist ideologies by vilifying rich people. He deceived people by saying that rich people were illegally using money that was supposed to be given to poor people. Mao brainwashed people by using propaganda and carrying out censorship. Back then, rich people were enemy of all other citizens. In Chinese society, Mao was Big Brother and rich people were Eurasia. The party took away all of their wealth and divided their land to poor people. Many rich people were then forced to perform labor in the countryside. My grandmother and her family was part of those rich people. My grandmother told me that she and her family secretly dug hole in their yard in the middle of night to hide their property. However, it was found out by the communist party next morning. The party confiscated all of their possession. This forced my grandmother’s parents to work in the countryside and separated my grandmother from her family. After few years had passed since my grandmother started living apart from her family, she found out that her mother passed away due to heavy labor. My grandmother was twelve years old.
