The story begins with Old Major, the oldest and wisest animal on the farm. He holds a meeting with the rest of the animals, and reminds them that all they do is work for human beings. Human beings steal everything; they are the only ones who consume without producing. He then carries on telling everyone that all animals are comrades, and that the real enemy is man, man is the root cause of all of problems! The animals agreed on seven commandments to follow, these were written onto the wall of the barn. The main one was that “all animals are equal.” Rebellion was the only solution! Old Major taught the animals a song “Beasts of England.” The animals all joined in with the singing. The song was about the day of which man is defeated, and animals are free! In the election, Snowball explains his plans of a new windmill to generate power for the barn. Napoleon knew that this would win Snowball the position, so he called in his dogs. He had stolen these dogs and privately trained them to protect him. They drove Snowball out of the farm and Napoleon won the election by default. Nobody argued because they were in fear after watching what had just happened. On page 39, the “9 enormous dogs wearing brass-studded collars came bounding into the barn,” this is when Napoleon became a dictator instead of a leader and kept his animals in fear. Squealer once again persuaded everyone into thinking that Snowball had stolen Napoleons idea of the windmill. All of the animals worked long hours as they were promised less work once it was complete. However one night there was a large storm and the windmill collapsed. This represents that Napoleon had not thought through the project and without strong foundations it collapsed. Napoleon uses Snowball as his scapegoat and blames this on
