George Orwell's Animal Farm: A Corrupt Opportunist

972 Words4 Pages

George Orwell’s book Animal Farm had a morose view at revolutions. He thought they only were changes in tyrants, and the people go back to being slaves again. Even though it is morose, Orwell is right. In the French Revolution the king and queen are overthrown, but it’s people were no better off. After the “coup de grace”(beheading the king and queen) the “Reign of terror” had begun. The leader of the revolt was ruthless, and not very merciful. He had hundreds of aristocrats and the nobility ranked people beheaded under the guillotine. Historians now say that the following government was even more tyrannical than the previous one. Even the Revolutionary War made more arguments and fights than before. Orwell said that revolutions end with the …show more content…

Napoleon was modeled on Joseph Stalin (A Soviet dictator), he was also modeled on Napoleon Bonaparte (A French general). Napoleon (The pig) never once showed interest in the wellbeing in Animal Farm; but instead the strength of his rule over it. Snowball may have won Miss Congeliality, but Napoleon won the crown. Not that Napoleon approves of democratic elections, he operates through cruelty and treachery. One example is his own private army. One day a mother had laid nine puppies that mysteriously disappeared. A while later the puppies spring up again fully grown, and chase Snowball off the farm. The dogs were being secretly raised as Napoleon’s private army of nine. Sooner or later Napoleon is as bad as the previous owner of Animal Farm, the tyrannical Mr. Jones. Evidence is shown that Orwell was implying Napoleon as bad as Mr. Jones when he said: “they wagged their tails to him the same way the dogs had to Mr. Jones.”, (Chapter.8)Orwell is using the dogs to portray Napoleons nature. Napoleon doesn’t need to worry about protests, he shut down public meetings. He doesn’t need to worry about sharing power because he’s the leader of every committee. He also doesn’t need to worry about being popular because his PR plan is thus: “In these days Napoleon rarely appeared in public, but spent all his time in the farmhouse which was guarded at each door by fierce looking …show more content…

In the farm the animals opposed Mr. Jones to only have another oppressor. And while Mr. Jones did neglect and kill his animals, Napoleon slaughtered them. Like the French Revolution, the Animal Farm revolution resulted in a change of tyrants. Napoleon was just as bad as Mr. Jones, even worse. While Mr. Jones did not know that his animals had hearts and minds, Napoleon knew and punished this fact. George Orwell had modeled the animals on real people in Joseph Stalin’s time. Snowball represented Lenin. During Joseph Stalin’s time, Lenin was taken ill as Stalin rose to power. When Lenin realized what Stalin was doing it was too late. As Snowball realized what Napoleon did, he was chased off the farm by Napoleon’s dogs. Napoleon represented Joseph Stalin. Napoleon ordered the animals to be killed and starved, the same way Joseph Stalin did his people. Squealer represented Vyacheslav Molotov. Vyacheslav Molotov was Stalin”s public speaker. Vyacheslav went and gave the people announcements from Stalin much like Squealer did for Napoleon. Boxer (A horse from Animal Farm) does not represent an actual person, but more of an ideal. He is the unseen labor and the invisible naivety that is in every government. The slaves, or workers, is what Boxer represents. He accepts things with a blind naivety that Orwell makes sure to paint in great detail. His sorry death at a glue factory aids the
