Winston Smith- A low person on the totem pole in words of his position at the ministry of truth. He lives in Oceania in the city of London. He is thirty nine years old. In the book, Winston does not want to be brainwashed and wants to rebel against the party. In some ways Winston is thoughtful and intelligent.
Julia- She is Winston’s beloved sweetheart. Julia is brunette that worked at ministry of truth like Winston. She claims to have had sexual affairs with many of the party members. Julia is a practical, sensible, and optimistic woman. Julia shows rebellion against the party.
O’Brien- A peculiar powerful man. Winston thinks he is a part of the brotherhood. He is actually part of the brotherhood.
Big Brother- Does not appear in the book, but is constantly talked about in it. Big Brother is said to be the leader of Oceania. He has propaganda about him because of all the posters in every household. He may not exist
Emmanuel Goldstein- He not appear in the book, but is the most hated man in Oceania. He is so much because he is allegedly the leader of the Brotherhood. Before his woes of being hated, he was a member of the party.

In which Winston Smith is a lower class employee at the ministry of truth. In this world everywhere he goes he is watched or listened to secretly. Winston knew he was being watched or listened to. The party watched him and everybody else through telescreens. In every building there is a poster of the party’s leader “Big Brother.” In the book, the party is trying to enforce a new language on its people called “newspeak.” This for the prevention of the thought of political rebellion.
