The book, Nineteen Eighty-Four, was published on June 8, 1949. It was written by an English author, George Orwell. He’s written plenty of other books and 1984 is one of his best known books. Nineteen Eighty-Four is in third person, following a man’s life during this time whose name is Winston Smith. In the beginning, it reveals that Oceania is controlled by a mysterious elite called, Big Brother. Throughout the rest of the book, it tells how Winston rebels against the Party then ends up getting caught.
George Orwell’s real name is Eric Arthur Blair. He used a pen name because he didn’t want to embarrass his family with his stories. The surname he derived from the beautiful River Orwell in East Anglia. He was born on June 25, 1903 in Motihari, Bengal, India. George Orwell’s father was a minor British official in the Indian civil service and his mother of French extraction. They were those of the “landless gentry”, as Orwell later called lower-middle class people. He spent his first days in India where his father was stationed. There are a lot of characters in the book, but Winston Smith is one of the main characters and the book follows his life during the dull period time. He’s a member of the Outer Party, working in the Records Department in the Ministry of Truth, rewriting and distorting history. Julia is Winston’s lover; she works in the Fiction Department at the Ministry of Truth. O’Brien is a mysterious member of the inner party. The Party rules the cast of Oceania; runs all branches of government, makes and enforces all laws and punishments. Big Brother is the perceived ruler of Oceania. Emmanuel Goldstein is presumed leader of the
