These commandments were made to show the animals the rules of their new society. However, throughout the story, the commandments slowly change. These changes directly mirror the different changes occurring on the farm. For example, at the beginning of the story, one commandment stated: “No animal shall drink alcohol” (9). However, after Napoleon drank too much and became drunk in chapter eight, the commandment changed to say “No animal shall drink alcohol to excess” (42).
