George Patton General George Smith Patton Jr. was a commanding officer in the U.S. army who was in control of the U.S. Seventh Army in the Mediterranean and European stages of WWII. He is best known for commanding the U.S. Third Army in France and also in Germany which followed the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 General George Patton was born in 1885 to a family who had a huge military background. Some family members served in the U.S. army and also served for the Confederacy. George Patton went to the Virginia Military Institute and the Military Academy in West Point. He also led the Seventh Army of the U.S. during the invasion of the island of Sicily. He was the first commander of the Allies to reach the city of Messina. During the battle he was temporarily removed from the commanding position because he hit two soldiers who were shocked after a shell hit near them. Patton returned to the commanding position following the Allied invasion of the city of Normandy in June. Here he made a quick advance to the city of France. Patton and his army sailed to Normandy in July of 1944. There they fought to the right of the Allies land troops. Patton’s strategy included quick and aggressive actions towards the enemy. Despite this Patton’s army did not see a lot of action compared to the rest of the Allied armies. The army would send spies to determine where the enemy was located and the strength of their army. The quick advancement of the Allied forces required Patton and his troops to rely on air support. Patton’s third army had so much more military information than all the other armies did. Patton’s army covered 60 miles in 2 weeks. The Allied forces were better equipped mechanically and technologically. This allowed them to make a quick advancement across
