The Great Depression was one of the most trying times in American History, and the 1932 election held the fate of the country. The American people were in a desperate time and they were looking to the next president for guidance. When it came down to the nominees, the American people had to choose between Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Herbet Hoover. Roosevelt was the obvious choice for the American people, as many people held Hoover personally accountable for the depression, as well as the fact that Hoover’s plan was for excessive government spending rather than actually dealing with the depression (Foner, p. 641). Franklin Delano Roosevelt was perhaps one of the most impactful presidents in the nation’s history, with one of the most anticipated inaugural addresses of the time.
During America's Progressive Era, large monopolies controlled the industries in which they did business, increasing the economy and harming the people. Monopolies were a big thing during the progressive era. A monopoly is when one person or business owns a product that they can only sell and produce. For example, a big industry like oil used to be owned by the Rockefellers, and they were the only ones who could sell oil in America. According to the Newsela article "Entrepreneurs: John D. Americans felt heartbroken when their homes were under attack. In the two speeches, both Roosevelt and Bush expressed how they felt and their ideas based on the two attacks on America. Their ideas will be expressed through tone, purpose, and audience. All speeches have a serious tone of some type. Roosevelt's tone was stern and commanding,since he had labeled the attack “a day that will live in infamy.”
When you read both candidates' arguments you can see both are very strong. But You would think one would have a better approach right? When I first read both candidates' arguments I noticed how they’re both similar but each of them added their own beliefs in their approaches. I believe that Chisholm's Speech had a better argument than Obama’s.
On April 30, 1789, George Washington took office as the First President of the United States with hopes of expanding upon the nation’s principles. He immediately assumed his responsibilities and built the nation to become the fantastic country it is today. At the end of his presidency, feelings of despondency and dejection filled the country, for humble Washington shaped the role and function as the leader of America. Based on his presidency alone, Washington influenced the lives of many, as all citizens looked up to him as an inspiration. Initially, he set precedents for future presidents to follow, keeping the nation civilized for years and years.
George Washington was a man of recognition of the importance of differing opinions. By associating himself with both Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton he led the people to see that he did not side just with one idea for the sake of his own personal beliefs. From the beginning of his presidency and through the end, George Washington continued to instill faith in the people of the nation to see that not only would the country thrive, but it would soon be the best nation the world would know. Washington takes his position as President of the United States and uses it to his advantage to spread his words and thoughts to all of the American public. He uses his Farewell Address to build his ethos and establish his credibility. Throughout his speech, Washington uses personal pronouns to connect him with the American public. When speaking of his hopes for his retirement, Washington conveys his desire to partake in America’s upbringing “in the midst of my fellow-citizens” and enjoy “our mutual cares, labors, and dangers” (16). Washington’s use of personal pronouns connects him to the American public because it establishes his role as an American citizen along with the rest of the country.
Rhetorical Analysis In April 30, 1789, President George Washington gave his inaugural address in Wall Street, New York. Beginning with the words, "...summoned by my country whose voice I can never hear but with veneration and love..." Washington uses personification as he describes the American people that called out for him for his help and his being in office as the whole country with nothing but positivity. The country had just voted for him, not to mention the 69 presidential electors.
George Washington also acknowledge that he made mistakes himself and is far from a perfect individual but made clear to be open minded of criticism and corrections and to seek challenges by taking the easy routes in life. Washington’s Farewell Address is important part of our history and is taught up till this day to young American children in our schools and by Historians but few people understand the meaning and the importance behind the Farewell Letter. The Farewell Address the federal government, warnings against the party systems, the importance of religion and morality, warnings against forming a permanent foreign alliance, and a powerful military. George Washington has an overwhelming reputation by his military service, his position as our first president of the United States of America, and by leaving his position in office by leaving behind his Farewell Address to give present and future Americans insight on the history of our country and what it’s known for. It’s well encouraged to research what American history is about and how we can apply the Farewell Address into our life by living in peace, exercising our freedom of speech and choice or religions, along with respecting our governments and live in unity to achieve success.
George Washington, being the first president, felt that in order to maintain structure in the government after he was no longer in charge, had to leave a letter to his country’s citizens. Washington began his address by giving thanks and appreciation to everyone for giving him the opportunity to lead their country and explaining his reasoning for declining another term. Along with these reasons, he pointed out some of the flaws of his presidency, admitting to the public that he was not a perfect American leader and that he is not a stencil into which all other presidents should be carved out of. By doing this he showed respect to the holders of office, and showed that he was part of the people. This is very similar to what Lincoln and Kennedy did in their respective speeches. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States are often said to be the greatest pieces of political prose. Obama quoted them when he read the opening sentence of the Declaration of Independence, spoke about upholding the Constitution by holding the inauguration

The 44th and first African American President, Barack Obama, in his Inaugural Address, promotes a call to action. Obama’s purpose is to express his gratitude for his opportunity to become president and discuss his plans for economic advancement. In order to reach the American people of the U.S., Obama adopts a serious and thought-provoking tone to urge them to support his plans for advancement. During this time of economic crisis, Obama clearly conveys to the American people through his use of metaphor, allusion, and anaphora, that it is time to take a stand and make a change in America.
In his inaugural speech given on January 20, 2001, George W. Bush address the country for the first time after being sworn in as the 43rd president of the United States. Millions of people from around the world tuned in to watch the president give his address. The people who voted for and against him are both wanting to hear what the president has to say. George W. Bush gives an effective inaugural address by using biblical allusions, collaborative language, and an anaphora in order to unite the country after a contentious election. Bush used biblical allusions to appeal mostly to the evangelicals who were listening to his speech.
Barack Obama’s win for President in 2009 was a historical moment for the United States. His inaugural speech was much anticipated, because this was going to set the tone for his presidency. His speech told the American people that improving the economy is one of his priorities, but there were also other areas he would like to improve like healthcare and the education system. This was a speech that was meant to persuade the American public to take action for them to rise as a nation again, and for them to put their trust into him. His message addressed a couple of specific points like his gratefulness to the American people, the different crises America is facing, how America will overcome these crises, replying to his cynics, addressing the world, and then he reminded America again to be brave like they’ve always been to overcome the hard times (5 Speechwriting Lessons from Obama's Inaugural Speech, (n.d.).
