As one of the most prestigious addresses given in history, Washington’s Farewell Address was a motivational epistle that informed the people of his decision to exit the political stage and stressed many important subjects. George Washington was a ranking commander and lieutenant in the military during numerous wars. With the ratification of the new Constitution around 1787-1789, he was unanimously elected by the Electoral College to be the president (George Washington, 2014). However, as a result of the political struggle between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton, Washington becomes weary and retires from office at the end of his second term (George Washington, 2014). Washington’s Farewell Address indicated his exit off the political stage but also it gave the people of America his principles and views including the importance of national unity, political tolerance, and exercising neutrality in foreign affairs. One of Washington’s primary goals of the address the underlying theme was the preservation of the union. Washington firmly believed that it was paramount to keep the things which established this union sacred especially in the Constitution (Washington’s Farewell Address, n.d.). For the preservation of the Union, he warned the people against sectionalism or restricting the interest of the nation (Washington’s Farewell Address, n.d.). Doing this will consequently destroy the virtue of what is America. A big part of Washington’s address discussed the politics of the nation. In debating this Washing addresses the danger of factions. He was concerned that forming if parties/ factions would create
