Misinterpretation of Georgia O’Keefe Art has the ability to influence people’s lives, alter perceptions, and even change culture. A perfect example of how art can change the minds of others is the award-winning artist Georgia O’Keefe. Georgia O’Keefe is considered to be the foremother of the feminist art movement and used iconography in her painting to further the detail and beauty of her artwork. Most of her art was interpreted as feminist due to her detailed paintings of flowers. As a result, her work has a large place in American history and was able to empower and influence women all around the world. This however, was not the actual interpretation that she intended. She is the daughter of Francis Calyxtus and Ida O’Keeffe and was the first girl in her family to be born. She attended the Art Institute of Chicago where she studied for one year before going on to the Art Students League in New York. During her studies she discovered how to successfully practice realist painting. As a result, she encompassed the skills of realism to create detailed artwork which fell into a category of its own. Although O’Keeffe never followed any specific movement, her style was primarily based around abstraction. Examples of this can be found in some of her earliest works which depicted magnified parts of flowers. Through her original and unique style, these paintings appeared as though they were from another world. Without prior knowledge, many people were unable to tell what the painting actually was. As a result, people during this time did not exactly know how to interpret her works but they were admired and appreciated
