“‘Georgiana,’ said he, ‘has it never occurred to you that the mark upon your cheek might be removed?’” (Hawthorne 1). In the short story, “The Birthmark”, Nathaniel Hawthorne writes of a man, Aylmer, who is obsessed with making his wife, Georgiana, perfect. This obsession inevitably leads to Georgiana’s death. Aylmer’s obsession and Georgiana’s willingness to feed this obsession are tantamount to the tragedy of this short story.
