The Investigation is a dramatic documentary of the Frankfurt War Crimes trials during the 1960s based on actual evidence from the trial. Weiss strips the trial down to its most essential features and converts it into a powerful play. It consists of extracted testimonies from numerous witnesses and defendants, including moments of examinations and cross-examinations conducted by the prosecutors and defense counsel. The nine unnamed witnesses represent the millions of individuals affected by the Holocaust. They were brought forth to testify to the barbarity of Auschwitz.

Film noir was influenced by two major film movements, German Expressionism and French poetic realism (Schrader 8). While German Expressionism influenced lighting techniques, realism affected narrative and cinematography. The Great Depression and World War II shaped film noir’s cynical tone that fate is uncontrollable. A classic example of film noir is the 1945 film Detour, directed by Edgar G. Ulmer.

Beckert, the child murder himself is presented to the audience several times throughout the film; he is shown to be involved with a constant internal struggle between allowing the darkest parts of his mind to overcome him and remaining sane. However, this film is, in some respects, making a statement less about murder and more about society at the time in which the film was released. More specifically, the film warns against and even mocks the competency and ability of the police to perform their jobs. There is a scene within the film involving an organization of beggars with the common goal of catching the child murderer.
The film "Sophie Scholl: The Final Days" shows a different perception of the everyday German civilians during the Nazi regime. When one thinks of an everyday German civilian during the time of World War II, most think that the civilians were happy with the idea of Hitler and Nazism. However, there were many civilians who did not support Hitler, but students are not taught that there were German people against the regime. The film shows the German civilians in a different way through the eyes of the White Rose. The White Rose was a group of non-violent students who were against the Nazi regime.

Wiesler begins the film as a loyal Communist Stasi captain who starts to spy on a successful play writer Georg Dreyman and has his apartment bugged, to make sure that the novelist is not conforming against the communist views that run East German. As the surveillance continues Wiesler discovers that the real reason behind the surveillance of Dreyman is because the Minister of Culture Bruno Hemp wants to eliminate Dreyman so he may pursue relations with Dreyman 's girlfriend Christa-Maria Sieland.
