Germany in World War I Throughout the duration of WWI there were many impactful events that occurred that shaped the future of Germany as well as Europe. By the end of the war, Germany, a population of 67 million, had formed alliances with Austria-Hungary and Italy which contributed to the end of The Great War in 1919. World War I was called The Great War because it was fought primarily in Europe but spread to the colonies, Asia, and the Middle East.
Germany was mostly a Protestant (63%) and Roman Catholic (36%) country. It was about 209 square miles in size. Albert Einstein was a German born physicist who developed the theory of relativity. He is considered to be the most influential physicist of the 20th century and he received the 1921 Nobel Prize in physics. The Grimm brothers, authors of famous fairy tales including Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Cinderella, and Hansel and Gretel, were also born in Germany. Europe had sustained almost an entire century of peace, two alliances even formed with intentions of keeping that peace. By 1914, things changed dramatically and German leaders wanted to become a dominating power in Europe and the world. They needed more colonies and territory. In order to do this, they had to take these from somebody else but they were surrounded by enemies and needed allies. They became part of the Triple Alliance with Austria-Hungary and Italy. The spark of WWI was the assassination of the Archduke of Austria-Hungary Franz Ferdinand, who was to become king of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and his wife Sophie on June 28, 1914 by a Serbian Nationalist. This angered Austria-Hungary, who then declared war on Serbia. Germany had entered the war because of their alliance with Austria stating if they went to war, so would Germany.
