The movie Geronimo: An American Legend (1993), was written by John Milius and directed by Walter Hill. Starring Jason Patric, Robert Duvall, Gene Hackman, Wes Studi and Matt Damon. The film takes place around the years of 1888 in the state of Arizona. The movie starts with the Lieutenant Britten Davis (Matt Damon), and the First Lieutenant Charles Gatewood (Jason Patric), both were reported for duty with the purpose of catching the Apache Leader: Geronimo (Wes Studi). As Geronimo is apprehended for the first time, he is transported to the U.S. Military Base of Operations at San Carlos in order to meet with General Crook or as the Apaches called him “Nanta Lupan” which it meant as “great wolf chief”. The film helped me to understand some of the situations that Native American people face. Situations, that made me to thinking about how it was possible that the government agreed with this injustices? Instead of working out a plan or an agreement that would be beneficial for both sides. From the movie Geronimo: An American Legend, I learned that Native people, specially Chiricahuas are honest and would do what you ask them, but if they do not agree on it, they will tell you. From what I saw, they are tolerant and respectful towards any situation, but if the person fails to fulfill their promise, they will be angry and will tell you the reason. I learned, that an Apache will express their trust in you by offering an object with special significance; in this case, the Apaches used a Blue Stone, which is the most valuable object for the Chiricahuas. I learned that Goyakla (Geronimo), was a real warrior and a great leader. He always looked over the Chiricahuas by doing “negotiations” that would be beneficial for both sides; at least that was his main goal.
