Jordan Peele is a name to remember. Known for his use of horror and comedy and sparking important conversations about racial inequalities in Hollywood. He pushes the boundaries with his controversial plots while collaborating with many different artists. Before his big blockbuster film “Get Out”, Peele’s roots originated in comedy. He co-starred in and co-created “Key and Peele” on Comedy Central, which is a hilarious comedy series. But “Get Out” was where Peele really got his recognition. What sets him apart from other directors is his ability to use horror as a way to explore real-world problems. He is able to catch the attention of the viewer through his unique blend of genres. He highlights the class divide and how while one family is thriving, another is suffering. Stereotypically the white family would be privileged while the black family would suffer, in ‘Us’ he uses the same black family for both sides. While one is vacationing by the beach, the less privileged version of them is suffering. Hence the title ‘Us’, it's a pivotal moment when they realize the people terrorizing them are quite literally them. They are represented through the ‘under-ground’ family being less privileged, while the ‘above-ground’ family is thriving, showing two sides to the same family. “Humanity is the monster in my films”, Peele told Vanity Fair in a 2017 interview. Meaning the ‘under-ground’ family plays the role of humanity and reality. Acting as a lens for the larger issue of class divide. Peele’s use of horror throughout the film allows him to exacerbate the issue, stressing the divide at hand. Breaking the norm of the ‘black and white’ family typically, he uses two black families to break out of stereotypes. His unique twist on the idea of the class divide allows for more critical thinking; Peele’s most recent movie “Nope”, has a slightly different intention than ‘Us’ and ‘Get Out’, written at a time when he was worried about the future of cinema. He worked on making this film visually appealing. Yet there are many deeper meanings to be argued, I believe there is a touch of capitalism as well as exposing people to erasing those that came before them. Those that paved the way for society today. Jordan Peele has shifted the world of cinema in a direction it has never seen before. His genius films that get the ball rolling when dealing with real-world issues. While using a seamless blend of horror and comedy, makes him a top tier director. His films are talked about far beyond the theater and will continue to be discussed for making
