In the wildly popular Mexican film, Los olvidados (1950), Spanish director Luis Buñuel exposes the harsh realities of life in Mexico during the 1950’s. Luis Buñuel’s work on Los olvidados portrays a societal loss for all hope due to crime and violence as an infinitely vicious cycle, coupled with addressing the lack of reform for dilapidated living conditions throughout Mexico. In Los olvidados, Buñuel follows Pedro (Alfonso Mejía) a neglected bastard, and El Jaibo (Roberto Cobo) the leader of a gang of homeless children loitering in vacant lots. Many sources explore their frustration with the horror movies popularized up to this day, due to the decision making and demeanor of the white characters, and the release of Get Out may very well have been a turning point in how racism is viewed in the film
Another part of the film that I found interesting was the sit-in movement. The sit-in movement was started by four black college students in Greensboro, North Carolina. (Let Freedom Ring) This group of black college students refuse to leave the whites-only lunch counter that denied them service. Jim Crow Laws made it impossible for African Americans to be equals in the South.
Get Out is a horror film released earlier this year in February. The film centers on Chris Washington, a black man, and his white girlfriend, Rose Armitage. Rose invites Chris to a weekend trip to meet her parents. When meeting Chris, Rose’s parents are overly accommodating towards Chris and constantly speak about how much they love President Obama and other African-American people. Chris attributes this as awkward attempts to deal with their interracial relationship.

They are often represented as people who are inferior to those of the Caucasian race, and are frequently presented with problems that are related to racial discrimination. The negative portrayal of African Americans in the media such as movies, have often been considered a large contributing factor to the racial tensions that still exist in our world today (Lemons, 1977). The movie, To Kill a Mockingbird, is a great example of the early portrayals of African Americans in films. “Get Out” is a spin chilling story yet with a touch of comedy, illustrating what it means to be black in America, to summarize, a black photographer called Chris goes on a trip with Rose, his white girlfriend to visit her parents. Worried that Rose’s parents might be racist, he later discovers that the family has several black “servants” who behave oddly, as if they are controlled. He is later unsettled by the visitors at the party who made racially-charged and gauche comments, chuckling over Chris’s built body and announcing, “Black is in fashion!” Chris later realized the chill that he had sensed was right on the mark. The Armitage family turn out not just to be racist, but to be abusing as well as profiting from abducting blacks.
One of my experiences resonated me about the film was with non-white privilege discrimination happened about three years ago. My family goes on a camping trip yearly as our family tradition. We reserved 6 campsites at Big Basin. We divided into two groups and designated two sites for cooking and gathering place. We went back and forth to all the campsites and spent time talking among adults while children were running around.
