Characters In the book, Getting Away With Murder by Chris Crowe, there are many important characters but the three main characters are, Emmett Till, Roy Bryant, and J.W. Milam. Emmett Till- Emmett Till is the most important character during the course of this book. Emmett Till is a fourteen year old African American boy. Emmett was a "handsome teenager, stout at 160 pounds and slightly shorter than many of his classmates." He had "funny-looking, light colored eyes." Till lived in a segregated neighborhood, in a six bedroom apartment with his Mother. He attended McCosh Elementary school in Chicago. On his fourth birthday, his father passed away, and a year later he contracted the Polio disease and miraculously survived without any physical disabilities. He was left with only a speech defect that caused him to stutter. He was an avid sports fan, baseball in particular, and his favorite team was the White Sox. Many of his friends described him as a, "fun-loving kid, who enjoyed pranks and a good laugh." He was brave, humorous, easygoing, confident, and hardworking. Milam: Roy had a half brother, and his name was J.W. Milam. J.W. was the accomplice in the senseless killing of Emmett Till. He was better off financially than Roy, and was married to Juanita Milam. He also had two young sons just like Roy. He was described as a strapping man. He was bald and sat in the court room with a constant twisted smile. Three words that describe J.W. is racist, unloving, and violent. J.W. said the plan was to, "just whip him...and scare some sense into him." This tell us that he didn't always have the original plan to kill the boy and it's possible that he wasn't as horrible as he comes across. Although we know that he didn't stick to the original plan, and that he is a violent, racist, and terrible man.
