Getting Bannered: An Analysis Of Titus's Journey

Early in the novel, Titus reflects about space travel and what it is like to have technology dictate your life, “...and it’s worse when you leave [the moon]. Then there’s that silence when you’re driving home alone in the upcar and there’s nothing but the feed telling you, this is the music you heard. This is the music you missed. This is what is new. Listen” (5).
This quote foreshadows that as the story progresses the feed will eventually take over Titus’ life.
When Titus and his friends arrive on the Moon, Titus, in a confused state, remarks, “I was trying to talk to Link, but I couldn’t because I was getting bannered so hard and I kept blinking and trying to walk forward with my carry-on. I can’t hardly remember any of it” (8).

Titus’ reaction to his mother’s story proves that this form of conception is “normal” due to the fact that he asks his mom to stop talking about it when she got to the part about him being conceived, which any teen would do when his/her parent is talking about the time they were conceived. This new form of conception reveals a lack of intimacy in Titus’ society because people no longer have to be intimate with each other in order to have a baby. In fact, they do not even have to be in the same room. By depriving humans of various forms of intimacy, romantic relationships will lack romance causing a weaker bond between people. It also makes intimacy more of an awkward topic for couples. Romantic relationships in this future are more like just a relationship. Even though two people love each other, there would not be any spark or special connection that would make the relationship
