“Getting Tough on Crime”
Senior Advisor to Mayor Alvin Brown of Jacksonville, Florida When we think of which cities are the most dangerous and crime polluted, the first few cities that naturally come to our mind are Miami, New York City, Los Angeles, Detroit, and Chicago, to name a few. However, some cities are more misleading than you think. For many years, Jacksonville, Florida held the unfortunate title of being the “Murder Capital of Florida.” Even though crime has slowly declined and Miami has regained that title, Jacksonville is still flooded with crime and ranks near the top for all violent crimes, making it one of the most dangerous cities in Florida. The city ranks number one in sheer size and, with a population of 840,000, naturally people feel tempted to commit crime. In order to put an end to this outrageous crime rate and bring order back to the citizens of Jacksonville, we must devise a policy to deter criminals. I propose we promote a policy to assemble security cameras throughout all of Jacksonville. The benefits will outweigh the cost, and even though there will be opposition, our …show more content…

By investing in this state of the art surveillance system, criminal offenders will refrain from criminal activity simply because they feel they are being watched. The cameras will give our citizens a sense of security by knowing someone is always watching out for them. By alerting the police of crimes and potentially dangerous situations, these cameras will give us the upper-hand on criminals. This will not only enhance our criminal justice system, but enhance the safety of the people. I recognize that the initial cost of 4,500,000 is high, but the money saved in avoided victimization, property crime, and violent crimes could double that. By putting a camera on every corner, park, and sidewalk, the city of Jacksonville can finally be safe and be proud to call this place
