In the course of the events of The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, there have been many characters that have either a brief or no appearance at all. These characters though have a significant impact on the theme, action, or even the development of the characters in the story. One of whom, is the ghost of King Hamlet. He, arguably, is one of the most significant side characters in the story of Hamlet. King Hamlet’s ghost single handedly ‘gets the ball rolling for the conflict of the story.’ Without the intervention of the ghost with Hamlet, there may have been no story at all. He doesn’t say anything, but it can be interpreted that he is warning hamlet to not harm his mother. Then his mother to express that “Nothing at all; yet all that is I see.” (Act 3, scene 4 , ln 134) after being asked if his mother could see the ghost. This is an important piece of character development as it shows how deeper and deeper Hamlet is falling into madness. Other characters he has an influence on are the characters of Ophelia and Gertrude. Through Hamlet and his actions, it is shown just how much of a slave he is to the quest for vengeance. So much so that he is committed to the role of a madman even after the curtains are called. This shows in Hamlet’s mother and lover. Through the actions that Hamlet has committed in his father’s name, he has driven his lover to suicide and his mother to death. The final fight between Laertes and Hamlet show a judgement in the kings error and posions the wine too soon. As such, without the knowledge of it being poisoned,
Gertrude is killed by the wine. This is the hubris of both the King and Hamlet. Both of them are too set on their thirst for their mission that they lose track cause others pain and
