This passage is from Act I scene I of Shakespeare’s play Cymbeline, In scene, Postumus and Imogen’s secret marriage has been found out by Cymbeline, Infuriate of the young’s disobedience, Cymbeline banished and imprisoned Imogen. In the passage, the queen had allowed them to have a last talk before Imogen left. I am going to approach this passage by dividing it into three parts, the first part Imogen and Posthumus’s love speech and gift exchange, the second part, the entry of Cymbeline and the exit of posthumus, and the third part Imogen’s conversation with Cymbeline.

The 1st to19th line, Imogen and Posthumus express their love for each other and exchanged an important gift so that they remember each other. The gift of diamond symbolizes how Imogen believes in their love, gives Imogen a pure, truthful and loyal character. In line 3 to 6, the use of gentle irony “Take it… But keep it till you woo another wife, when Imogen is dead. ” Brings readers to the idea that although Imogen, a princess, a strong, god as, truthful character, she still has the expectation and attitude toward her love one, just like any ordinary women, throughout this part of the passage, Imogen develops a more humane ordinary side of her. …show more content…
