The play The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, is a drama play. It is about a sad time period in Salam, around 1692. During this time period, witchcraft hysteria rumors started to circulate around Salam. These rumors turned into false beliefs, causing about 20 deaths and putting over 100 innocent people in jail. It all began with a girl that goes by the name Abigail. Abigail and her crew accused over 200 people of witchcraft. These accusations were obviously fake, but she was never questioned because her family were good Christians. So they thought she was a gift from God sent to purify Salam. Therefore, anyone accused of witchcraft basically had an ultimatum to confess and be sent to jail or tell the truth and be hanged. She went by the name Martha Corey. Martha Corey raised and sold the pigs. She sold the pigs to Mr. Walcott at one point. The pigs she sold Mr. Walcott later died due to his bad care, after the death of the pigs, Mr. Walcott accused her of putting a spell on them. Not only that, her husband, Giles Corey, unfortunately unintentionally accused her of witchcraft. She was immediately suspected because Giles Corey mentioned that she would stay up late reading “strange books” which she would hide from him. He said that her reading affected his ability to pray and the court considered that witchcraft. Before this, she had a good reputation as a puritan of Salam. When Martha Corey was being tried she said I am innocent to a witch, I know not what a witch is. If I were, I would know it. (Miller 1187) She was a good Christian therefore she did not lie. She believed if she did not lie, she would go to heaven. She knew that she would be hanged, but she did not break the sin of lying, so she also died instead of living with compromised principles.
