Gilmore Girls a cult classic.
Gilmore Girls (2000-2007; The WB) is a series created by Amy Sherman- Palladino and was aired on 5 October 2000 on The WB and ran for seven seasons with the final show airing on the 15 May 2007. Gilmore Girls has been named by Times magazine as one of the 100 greatest television shows of all time. The series follows a young mother, Lorelai Gilmore and her sixteen-year-old daughter, Rory Gilmore through their everyday lives in their small factitious town of Stars Hollow. Gilmore Girls is about an ever-changing relationship between a mother and daughter as both individuals grow and mature throughout the entire run of the show. The writers, creators and directors of the show wanted to establish Stars Hollows as a place that celebrated community shown through many of the town meetings and town fundraisers or celebrations (Diffrient, 2010:108). The DNA of the show is found within its special existence. The show develops two ‘worlds’, one in Stars Hollow and one in Hartford. This spatial divide with Hartford being 30 minutes away from Stars Hollow helps the viewer to establish a difference between the towns (Diffreint, 2010:110). The viewer is meant to view Hartford as a town that accepts binary values as opposed to Stars Hollow that rejects it (Diffrient, 2010:110). Essential to the DNA of Gilmore Girls are the supporting characters-Taylor the town’s mayor, Miss Patty the dance teacher, Kurt, Michel, Sookie the clumsy cook, Jackson- that add to the shared ethos of the town and therefore adding to the essence of Gilmore Girls (Diffrient, 2010:110). By the end of Season One Rory and Lorelai have both had relationships- Lorelai’s ending in a proposal and Rory’s ending in a breakup and Rory finally succeeding at Chilton. The seasons arc is that of any story, however it offers another spanner at the end of each season to draw the audience members back in. At the end of Season One Rachel, Luke’s girlfriend, tells Lorelai that Luke is in love with her causing her to question her serious relationship with Max.
