William Ginn was the guest speaker in Dr. Sander’s class on 10/20/16. He is the only Cap Director in the state of Oklahoma. During his presentation, he discussed several things. He is in charge of the advocacy organization which was federally mandated in 1973, also known as the Rehabilitation Act. His cap advocacy program handles complaints in the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services. Additionally, he assists clients who have documented disabilities and his focus is to employ the individual and put them back to work. Every $1 in which DRS brings in is matched by the state (4 to 1 ratio). Seventy percent of individual’s with disabilities are unemployed. It is a fact, that able bodied individuals have more opportunity and jobs than individuals with disabilities. Ginn also sponsors a disability day at the capital every year and his objective is to inform the legislature of people with disabilities and their needs. Mayor Fallen appoints all ORC employees for a term of 3years. As a result, of William Ginn presentation, I learned what his organization stands for, who it serves and its purpose and mission. Furthermore, he enlightened me on subjects in which I was not aware of. In my opinion, his compassionate work of advocacy as it relates to individual’s with disabilities is a humanitarian effort that is needed in today’s society because people has stereotypes and discriminate against individuals in which they do not understand nor have had experience with.
