Everyone belongs to groups known as subcultures. These groups are what make up who we are. There are thousands of subculture groups that exist within Canada. Ethnic and racial groups share the language, and food. Other subcultures are created by shared experiences for example the skateboarding subculture, developed by young people, not only includes the sport but also a different style of dress. Countercultures are cultures at odds with society because their belief system is different than the dominant culture. Countercultures may involve militaristic bands of men and women who are deeply suspicious of government and are willing to resort to violence (Macionis and Gerber, 2012, 74). What is subculture? Subculture refers to cultural patterns that set apart some segment of a society’s (Macionis and Gerber, 2012, 72). Subculture often consists of the study of symbolism attached to clothing and music. Members of subculture often signal their membership through distinctive and symbolic use of style, which includes fashion. An example of subculture is an article from the book Pretty in Punk: Girls’ Resistance in a Boys’ Subculture by Lauraine Leblanc. In 1984, Lauraine Leblanc was kicked out of her school in Montréal, for wearing a spray painted t-shirt that read “Eat Dirt and Die”. In 1999 Leblanc produced a book that examines girl’s participation in a punk subculture. Her research came from 40 punk girls from New Orleans, Atlanta, Montréal and San Francisco. From Leblanc’s analysis, it shows that punk girls are challenging cultural norms, cultural gender norms and subcultural gender norms.
