When a challenge is presented to us we can either persevere through it or give up. Settling in life is comfortable, but proofing that you can achieve higher than expected is rewarding. Thinking about all the reasons why we started helps us get pass the difficult times. Coming from a background where no one has received an education higher than high school, I can say that it wasn’t easy getting to UT, but it was because of my family that I did not give up.
Growing up, my weekends, summers, and holidays were spent in Mexico, inside the walls of the church serving God with my mother and participating in different sports events with my father. As a little girl, I was naïve to most of my parents’ troubles, but with time, I became more observant. While I lived comfortably in the United States, from Monday through Friday, my parents struggled with a corrupt government and lack of resources in Mexico. Overhearing their conversations and realizing the sacrifices my parents were making to keep my siblings and me from leaving the United States made me yearn to want to obtain a college education that would help me give my parents the life they deserved. However, I quickly learned that with success came failure, and that with failure came valuable lessons. As an athlete, a Christian, a writer, and a leader, I was exposed to different circumstances that helped me grow as an individual. Through the good and the bad, my experiences helped open my eyes to a reality in which I have learned to understand and manage different aspects of life. Time after time, I made many mistakes.
