Being an old emperor, Marcus Aurelius wanted Maximus to be the new emperor of Rome after he had died. He knew that general Maximus had the power to restore the old empire to the Roman senate. However, Marcus Aurelius’s son, Commodus, figured out the plan of his father {giving power to Maximus}, thus, he murdered his father. After the death of Marcus, Commodus claimed to be the new emperor of Rome. He planned to execute Maximus in order to secure his claim to the throne. Eventually, Maximus freed himself from execution , but was sold into slavery to become a gladiator. After a few days , Maximus and many other gladiators were sent to Rome to perform battles for Commodus. As the gladiators battled in the Arena, Maximus revealed his true identity of being a Spaniard.Seeing Maximus as a gladiator, Commodus again planned for the death of Maximus. He wanted to kill Maximus by gaining approval from the mob. Before the last battle in the arena had started, Commodus had secretly stabbed Maximus with a dagger causing his lungs to be damaged. For example, when becoming emperor of Rome, Commodus was a teenager who already had a wife. Also, in the battles, he was very strong and outgoing. In the movie, however, commodus became emperor when he was an adult . He was not married and he had a secret love for his sister. Another idea that was inaccurately depicted was the way gladiator battles were shown. In the movie, Gladiator battles were shown as a disorganize mass slaughter, but in real life, gladiator battles had rules, and regulations to games. In addition, most combat was fought as individual duels. Furthermore, at the end of the movie, commodus was killed by maximus in the arena. However, realistically, Commodus was strangled by one of his wrestling partners after ruling the empire for thirteen
