Family and Slavery in Gladiator Spencer Toms South Central Kentucky Community and Technical College Abstract This sociological movie critique is a review of the well proclaimed movie Gladiator and how is has affected society. There are many sociological aspects packed into this movie, but the three discussed were deemed the most important. The three main sociological aspects of Gladiator are the influence of family, the distinct culture of the ancient Roman Empire, and the influence of slavery. Many other aspects exist but these were deemed a priority. The fact that the death of Maximus’ family pushed him so far over that edge to become a gladiator just for the soul fact to face his family’s murderer shows just how important family is. Slavery is shown to completely strip Maximus of everything including his dignity. It forces him to prove that he can survive. It also shows that slavery is not just about race. The culture of Rome is vividly shown throughout the movie. It can shock many people who experience it for the first time.
