In Haiti, back in 1791 to 1803 the Haitian revolution started. Slaves population have no liberty or property. They faced a lot of unfair deals that the society confirmed. Writing devices are used perfectly throughout the whole book, including foreshadow of Curley’s wife’s and Lennie’s final death, symbolization that stands for social issues back to 1930’s, and comparison of the weak and the strong. First, foreshadow in this book is mainly used as clues of both Lennie’s and Curley’s wife’s death. According to the whole book, Lennie, a poor big man with mental problems, was fond of petting small animals such as mice and rabbits that were finally killed by Lennie accidentally. He has also displeased young ladies on the former farm by touching them rudely, which drove Lennie and George to work on the other farm. These foreshadows indicate that Lennie would definitely do harm to Curley’s wife when she invited him touching her.
The French Revolution was one of the most significant wars that changed France’s history. The Revolution started in 1789 and ended in 1799 and was mainly initiated by the conditions affecting the Third Estate. Louis XVI was predominately the king during this time period but little did he know that an uprising among the peasants was happening. The French Revolution was caused by the Enlightenment ideas because of the American Revolution, the knowledge of rights, and the questioning of France’s government. The American Revolution was basically the “fire” that ignited the change the Third Estate wanted to see in their country.
People created change by revolting against the power who enslaved them. The Haitians created change by rising against their captors based on the text. With that revolution, the French had lost money from the war that they were fighting and had to make some tough decisions. According to the text, the Haitians revolted against the French, and because of that, the French lost money because Haiti was the wealthiest colony of the French.
In 1791, the Haitian Revolution began. The commander was Toussaint Louverture. He was assisted by Georges Biassou and Jean-François, leaders of the rebel army of black slaves. Louverture was an educated former slave who had studied the military campaigns of Julius Caesar. His skills and knowledge contributed to his leadership and organizational ability, two characteristics that had been missing in past revolts.
Within the period of 1750 to 1914, changes were taking place around the world. New empires and nations began growing and expanding their territory, and as a result of these actions, wars, bankruptcy, and rebellions became more common. An example is the American Revolution, in which the American colonists, who were influenced by new philosophies and the sense of nationalism, fought and gained their independence from Britain. This revolution eventually inspired others throughout the world as it was successful in gaining the colonies independence from a powerful European empire. Those revolutions include the Haitian and French Revolution.
Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution inspired millions of free and enslaved people of African descent to seek freedom and equality throughout the Atlantic world. Toussaint and other black leaders of Saint-Domingue helped to lead the only Atlantic slave society which successfully defeated its oppressors. The former slaves were able to achieve freedom and equality by political and military force, when they defeated the advances of French, British, and Spanish troops. In 1804, they created the second independent Republic in the western hemisphere. As Toussaint Louverture’s life story helps demonstrate, the Haitian Revolution was a complex series of conflicts and alliances between different classes, populations, and political interests.
The stand against slavery persisted with the revolutionary ideals of personal liberty and fundamental rights for all. The free people of Haiti would never again return to their status of servitude and subjugation. Napoleon did not foresee the strength of free Haiti, and it cost him his ultimate
From 1791 to 1804, the country that had the biggest impact on the Haitian Revolution was France. In fact, the French Revolution was a significant catalyst to the Haiti’s own revolution despite having started a few years prior. At this point, France’s economy was still suffering after their involvement in both the American Revolutionary War and the Seven Years’ War. To combat the huge amount of debt they owed, France issued widely unpopular taxation schemes which ultimately caused more harm than benefit. Additionally, the heightened privileges enjoyed by the aristocracy and the clergy drew popular resentment.
My thoughts about the events leading to the Haitian revolution was the impacts taken by Toussaint Louverture. He had a major impact on the enslaved Africans rights, liberty, and prosperity. With the help of Louverture along with other world leaders, Haiti was able to find their independence. I personally feel like they were only country that the people belonging there actually fought for their rights and freedom. During that time many of the country’s had others trying to fight to lead the country to independence, but Haiti actually had there own fight for them.
Even with Haiti being ostracized by many countries, merchants still spread the news and caused many countries to have slave revolts. The significance of the revolution has caused mass change around the world on its stance towards slavery. As the Haitian revolution was the first violent slave uprising the world had seen. With it, then came the concern around slavery and the spark for civil rights movements across the globe. The Haitian revolution was fought based on the American and French revolutions principals, which paved the way for Universal human rights we now have today.
The instigating event of the Haitian Revolution exposes the comparison between the victors and the losers of war and all the rippling effects in the aftermath of such conflicts. Most historians agree that the revolutions of the Atlantic world were an intertwined journey for sovereignty and equality that led to mutual and progressive influences. Every event influenced the next and perpetuated the stimuli as well as compounding instigating factors. By comparing and analyzing the status of the French and British Empires following the Seven-Years War, historians can further research the influences this event had on the events in Haiti and the mainland colonies. Following the loss of the war, France suffered from developing debt and an identity crisis.
