The earth, complete with beautiful vistas, breath taking forests, and crystal clear oceans to name a few of our blue marbles many natural beauties. Unfortunately, our environment and world are currently being destroyed with the help of humans and an invisible gas. One of the most destructive gasses found in a group collectively known as greenhouse gasses is carbon dioxide, which humans have produced a steady supply of for generations. This gas has lead and is leading to an increase in the earths temperatures which has been labeled as global warming. There are those that try to discredit the threat or reality of global warming. However, there is a wealth of knowledge that shows that global warming is a very serious threat to humanity and the …show more content…
It is hypothesized that humanities contribution to increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere began during the world’s first industrial revolution which began in “Great Britain about 1750.” (Waskey) This lead to “improvements in transportation systems and machinery” (Waskey) that primarily ran off coal or oil which produce vast amounts of carbon dioxide as a byproduct of burning. Even though humans have been a constant source of carbon dioxide for over two-hundred years, the controversy over global warming and its implications, threat to the earth, and whether or not it even exists have only started within the last few decades. The arguments against whether or not global warming is occurring range from the delusional average person suggesting that because it continues to snow that global warming is obviously false. To the more credible section, some scientists claim that humans have no effect on global warming and that all “Global warming and climate variability occur as natural phenomena.” (Manuel-Navarrete) The largest hurdle to accepting global warming and avoiding the many disasters that can be caused such as super storms, raise in sea levels that could lead to partially submerged coastal cities, heatwaves and …show more content…
Some of the effects global warming has been shown to have on weather are currently affecting the U.S. One of the major effects has to do with “extreme variations in the amount of rainfall across the globe” (Benson), this effect is easily witnessed in California which is experiencing one of the worst droughts in recent memory. Jump a few states over and suddenly Texas has record setting rainfall all across the state, so much so that the city of Huston has flooded on more than one occasion this year. Though dangerous droughts and flooding are manageable to an extent, however with a rising atmospheric temperature caused by global warming you also have an increasing oceanic temperature. While a warmer might sound more pleasant for those beach vacations it has deadly implications. Scientists have noted an “increased intensity of tropical cyclones in the north Atlantic within the past 25–30 years, and storms with heavy precipitation have also increased.” (Benson) The reason this is the case is because as the temperature of the top layer of an ocean increases there becomes a greater difference between the water temperature and the cooler air, this is what leads to hurricanes and cyclones. The United States just recently experienced a small category one hurricane named Hermine, which was followed by a category five tropical cyclone by the name of Matthew three weeks later. Two hurricanes within the same
