Gloria Marie Farren was born at the closing of the infamous era, “The Roaring Twenties”. 1920’s are celebrated and remembered for massive shifts in all aspects of life. Fear of communism filled the country as organizations such as the KKK ruled the south. However, America had a remarkably strong economy, which was obliterated by the Wall Street Crash at the end of the decade. Despite all tragedies, American social life thrived; a new family demographic appeared and the nation was revolutionized with advancements in communication. The twenties set America up for it’s future of being a great nation that could endure anything and still triumph against all odds. The twenties began with a bang when the 18th amendment, prohibiting the manufacturing, sales, and distribution of liquor in the United States, was set into place. Alcohol was considered to be “America’s National Curse” (History.com Staff, 18th and 21st Amendments). It was believed that the removal of alcohol from the country would cause crime rates to fall, families would become stronger, and the national character would improve beyond proportion. Later that year, the 19th Amendment was ratified in the US. Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon, a successful banker, lowered the top marginal income tax rate for the wealthiest Americans by 48%. With significantly lower taxes, the wealthy had more money to invest. Investments were commonly put towards mass-production, which was feed by new technologies such as electricity and the assembly line. At the time, less than one percent of the American people owned any stock, which means that any return from the an investment was massive.
