“Women’s bodies are valued as ornaments. Mens bodies are valued as instruments.” (Steinem). Gloria Steinem was born in Toledo, Ohio on March 25, 1934 her parents divorced when she was 10 years old and after that she was in essence forced to grow up faster and care for her mother. She began work as a freelance journalist and from there worked her way up to one of the world’s most famous feminist. Gloria Steinem is a revolutionary figure in American history because she changed the course of women's rights in the United States. Gloria Steinem has made a major impact on society today in many ways one being through “Ms.” magazine, which she founded in 1972. Her magazine was the first to talk about domestic and women issues. FGM is most common in countries in Africa and is widely affecting the women and younger generations. Many women and children are negatively affected by this procedure and yet it is still around. “For instance, child marriage is a major cause of death among teenage girls because they have babies too soon, when their bodies are not developed. FGM — female genital mutilation — is also a cause of death, and sexualized violence in warzones… Yugoslavia.” (Steinem qtd. by Marcotte). Women and even girls are suffering from these extremely dangerous procedures they did not even want to have done. Even their children can suffer from the results of the procedure by having major disabilities and or death. Men have such an infatuation with constantly being on control that they do things like this. Ms. Steinem has an unconventional way of looking at the situation however, she blames men for the whole situation. “The real reasons for genital mutilation can only be understood in the context of the patriarchy: men must control women’s bodies as the means of production, and thus repress the independent power of women’s sexuality.” (Steinem qtd. By New World Encyclopedia contributors). Her words are valuable because can teach men to take a step down and realize the pain women are forced to undergo because of them.
