Most vikings were farmers and never picked up a sword in their life. Glory! where could glory be found in a people of farmers? It was found in the same place where we find it today, in sports! Just as baseball is America’s pastime skiing was the pastime of the vikings. They were so enthralled with it they had a god named Ullr which was a god of skiing. Aside the glory brought to oneself sports brought glory to the whole tribe. The epic character Beowulf received his glory by vanquishing beasts, and the real life vikings received glory from skiing. In sports the vikings took their glory from other tribes. They found glory for themselves and their tribe by being the best at skiing. The geats had gods dedicated to warfare and the vikings had a god dedicated to skiing. Their religion was based on their desire for glory and that is prevalent in their culture and who they worship. The Vikings and the Geats had similarities with their worship. It is a glory based, meaning their gods all have incredible amounts of glory. All of their gods have had trials and fights and games where they have won their glory. Beowulf, like the norse gods started out powerful and clever but they both gained glory.
