The modern biology has been developing quickly, so there are various technologies to use gene and DNA. Then, have you ever heard about the GMO foods? The GMO means “Genetically Modified Organism”, that is, any organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Some people expect that the GMO foods will solve the food shortage problem and they can intake more nutritious foods. Then, should we intake the GMO foods? We shouldn’t intake the GMO foods, because they can cause diseases like cancer, can have unpredictable effects on the ecosystem, and can cause an increase of pesticides and herbicides. Some GMO foods aren’t needed to use pesticides and herbicides, but there are many chemicals use for GMO plant’s production. Some hybrid GMO foods can endure from the herbicides, so the companies develop new herbicides. Then, the use of pesticides and herbicides will increase. Also, Monsanto which is the largest multinational corporation supplies many seeds globally. It governs the food industries all over the world. It supplies the pesticides and the herbicides too, so it doesn’t supplies the GMO seeds that don’t need to use pesticides and herbicides. It doesn’t have to engage in the worthless business. Statistically, the use of pesticides and the herbicides has increased since 2002. The production of the GMO foods has also increased from the same time. It says that the use of the GMO foods is proportional to the use of pesticides and herbicides. Then, why is the use of the pesticides and herbicides important? The pesticides and herbicides could make powerful effects to remove insects and weeds by using small quantity of ingredients, so their toxicity is very harmful to humans’ body. Therefore, the humans can be exposed to toxicity when they intake the plants. Also, the GMO foods can react with the herbicides, the humans can’t know that how the herbicides can occur the unpredictable reaction, so the humans can’t know the influence of the GMO foods.
