God's Role In The Knights Tale

While reading The Knights Tale, I found myself constantly comparing the role of the Gods in the story and the role of Theseus. The majority of Part III consisted of describing the temples for the Gods constructed by Theseus; the fact that each temple was so unique, detailed, and symbolic for each God depicts their societal importance. The amount of the tale taken up by these descriptions also reinforces the notion that the Gods rule above all. Each character in the story calls on a God to seek clarity and help them achieve their goals: Palamon calls on Venus, Emelye calls on Diana, and Arcite calls on Mars. To me, their choice of Gods was interesting—I was expecting both of the knights to call on Mars, God of war, so when Palamon called on
