Most schools in the United States promoted college or university as a student's only option upon graduating from high school. But is college really a necessary to be a literate individual who obtains a decent paying job? In the article "Are Too Many People Going to College?," author Charles Murray claims that in fact too many people are attending college today. Murray argues that college isn't necessary nor is it realistic for every person. Some people might say that there are loads of jobs that do not require a college degree, especially in this time and age.
In reality, this is false because the backbone of our economy typically does not have a college degree. Necessary jobs such as mechanics and plumbers usually do not attend college because there is no glaring need. Still, however, they make a nice living. For instance, “A car mechanics trade association reports that repair shops have seen their business jump significantly in the current recession” (Source C). This proves that one can live without a degree.
Graduate high school, go to college, get a job. Students everywhere have been told this since day one. The price of this, however, has not been discussed or disclosed to them. The interests of young students are usually not know so they are prepared to go to a 4 year university, something that some students will discover was not made for them, but was just passed off as the only way to obtain a successful job and life. In a world of modernization, even some minimum wage jobs require a degree or certification of some sort, so with the cost of college rising nearly 330% in the last twenty years, should students really be fed the idea that they have to go to a university and get that degree?

However, our generation now has so many different options with technology on the rise. A lot of jobs nowadays do not require a four year College degree.
Everyone is heading back to college from winter break (I hope you all enjoyed yourselves) and now it’s time to reunite with your college friends, TURN UP, and most importantly, hit those books. Going back to school can be therapeutic for most, but for some, it can be a sad moment. The dream of going to college has been present since I remember. However, I lived in a low income household in Spain, and at that time my family was going through a great depression, lack of financial stability, and my parent’s relationship was not at its best; consequently, the idea of having another expense was not a priority for the family, needless to say that college was not an option.
