It is hard to say definitively which breed of dog is the most intelligent, but we can get an overall picture of which breeds generally seem to be intelligent and which ones tend to be a bit slower in the head. Dumb or smart, dogs make great companions, so don 't think too much of this!

Australian Cattle Dogs are one of the smartest dog breeds out there. They are bred for herding cattle which means they have to be pretty organized and intelligent in order to be successful at it. The downside is that they can bore easily and get into trouble when they are looking for excitement. One of the more obvious indicators of their high intellect is that some Australian Cattle Dogs will actually put away their toys when they are done using them. Now if only you could get your children to follow suit.

Golden Retrievers are another highly intelligent dog breed. Some have shown the ability to learn over 200 different commands, and they are also extremely affectionate and loyal companions. Golden Retrievers were originally bred as hunting dogs that would retrieve (Hence their name) fallen prey for their masters. Golden Retrievers are extremely loyal and friendly, which makes them very easy to train. They are often used as guide dogs for the blind or rescue dogs because they are patient and intelligent.
